Phonics Instruction and Its Types

 


Phonics, by definition, is a teaching method that emphasizes understanding the relationship between letters and their corresponding sounds. This approach helps learners with letter-sound recognition, correct spelling and pronunciation, and improved reading comprehension, all of which build the foundation for impeccable writing and speaking skills.

Five Proven Learning Methods to Master Phonics

Synthetic Phonics

Synthetic phonics instruction is explicit. This approach focuses on helping children become aware of the distinct sounds that make up a word. Kids are introduced to concepts such as blending sounds to form words and pronounce them correctly. As a result, they learn to identify the letters that represent those sounds effectively.

For example, s + a + t makes up the word - sat - which is represented by the letters s-a-t.

Analytic Phonics

Analytic phonics instruction, on the other hand, teaches the opposite of what synthetic phonics does. This approach trains children to break down a word into its individual sound units.

For example, sat can be broken into s-a-t, conveying that it is made up of three sounds.

Linguistic Phonics

This approach is very similar to analytic phonics. This style focuses on explaining the relationship between phonemes (sounds) and letters. It begins with a spoken word, say, cat. Then, the word is broken into individual sounds - k / ae / t.

And finally, children are introduced to the corresponding letters: c-a-t.

Analogy Phonics

This method helps children read new words by decoding patterns and rhyming words. For example, if you know the word “cat,” you can figure out “hat” or “bat” because these words share the same ending sound and pattern.

Embedded Phonics

Embedded phonics instruction closely follows the “whole language learning model.” It does not follow an organised, step-by-step plan, rather, it teaches reading and writing through stories and meaning.

This style does not explicitly teach how letters and sound go together. Instead of teaching each sound individually – like, “This is the sound the letter P makes,” – the teacher will read a book with the class and discuss the sounds in the words as they come up. This provides children with a contextual understanding of letters and sounds.
