Fun-filled Games to Teach Phonics to Kids

Phonics games are super fun activities that can help your students to practice key pronunciation and spelling skills. Teaching phonics through games is an efficient way of teaching children to read and write. It helps in training students to hear the sounds, identify the sounds and link those sounds to symbols we call letters.

  • I-Spy - This game is like a boredom buster. You can fill a large juice bottle with a variety of items that start with various letters. You can use rice or sand to fill the remaining space. To begin the game, you can use an alphabet deck to pick a letter and have your child shake the bottle and hunt for the object that begins with a chosen letter.

  • Kaboom Alphabet - This game involves using craft sticks and cups. Each child will pull out a stick from the cup and say the sound of the letter mentioned on the stick. If a player pulls out a stick which has ‘Kaboom’ written on it, he/she will have to put all his sticks back in the cup.

  • Digraph Bug Swatting - Laminate and cut the game cards and four bugs. It is best to have a fly swat but the students can also use their hands. You can place the bugs on the floor and the game cards beside them. Students can take turns to turn over the card and say the word that is on the card. After this, they must swat the bug that shows the corresponding digraph.

  • Sorting Activities - Sorting Activities are a great way to teach phonics to students. Two hula hoops can be kept on the floor, which is labelled with initial consonant sounds. The kids will enjoy sorting the objects in the hoops.

  • Partner Reading - Partner Reading is a great way to practice listening skills as well as reading. Divide the students into pairs and give them copies of the same text. One partner can read the text and the other follows with his own copy. The listening partner can help the reading partner when he faces difficulties while reading. After some time, they can switch roles.

  • Shared Writing - Shared writing is an effective way of introducing independent writing activities. For beginning students, we can start with simply spelling the basic CVC word together. Eg: You can ask them to spell the word ‘CAT’ by drawing three cradles on the whiteboard and saying each sound. Thereafter challenge them to come up and write the corresponding letter in the cradle until they have written the word ‘CAT’.
