Why Reading Fluency is important for Kids

Reading fluency is important as it builds a bridge between word recognition and

comprehension. It helps them to make connections between what they are

reading and their own background knowledge. Therefore, it helps in enhancing

their comprehensive skills.

So, here’s how you can improve your child’s reading fluency.

What is Reading Fluency?

Reading fluency can be defined as the ability to read text easily, quickly and

expressively without making much effort and with little difficulty comprehending

the meaning of the text. There are two ways to evaluate a child’s reading fluency:

  • Oral Reading Fluency

  • Silent Reading Fluency

Oral Reading Fluency

Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy and proper

expression. To understand what they read, children must be able to read fluently.

When reading aloud, fluent readers read in phrases and add expression

appropriately. Their reading is smooth.

Activities to support Oral Reading

  • Support and encourage your child when he/she is reading.

  • Check with your child’s teachers to find out about your child’s word decoding skills.

  • If your child has difficulty in sounding out words, you must try phonics.

  • But if your child is comfortable in decoding words, help them in building

  • fluency, speed and accuracy by making them do the following activities:

  1. Echo-Reading - In echo-reading the parents read one sentence at
atime while the child follows along in the text. Once the adult pauses,
the child echoes back the same sentence. This practice instills
confidence in your children and helps in improving their reading
proficiencies.

2. Choral Reading - Choral reading involves the child and the adult
reading the text in unison, together. Try chorally reading your child’s
favorite book or poem and keep encouraging your child to read along
with you.

3. Paired Reading - Paired reading is a combination of choral reading
and independent reading by the child. Use books your child’s teacher
has suggested. Start by reading together with your child and slowly
increase the pace of reading. Gradually let him read alone. Keep
encouraging their reading efforts!

Silent Reading Fluency

Silent reading fluency can be a bit more complicated than oral reading fluency.

A fluent silent reader must have the ability to read what is in front of them without

any hesitation. In silent reading, the reader is expected to read without mouthing

or saying the words out loud, while visually taking in and comprehending more

than one word at a time.
